Hunting Charters

Stewart Island/Rakiura provides excellent opportunities for hunting whitetail deer. red deer and possums.


Permits and Hunting Blocks

Permits are required for all hunting on Stewart Island and must be applied for in advance from the Department of Conservation or the Rakiura Maori Land Trust.

A combined open zone and block system is in operation. Each hunting party may apply for only one block. Permits are issued for a maximum period of 10 days for hunting blocks and up to 90 days for the open zone. Bookings for blocks can be made up to 12 months in advance.

Confirmation of the booking is required 60 days prior to your arrival on the island. Failure to do this will result in cancellation of the booking. Permits may be received by post or collected from the Department of Conservation office in Halfmoon Bay prior to your trip. Most blocks are suitable for 6 hunters.

Whitetail deer may be found in moderate numbers all over Stewart Island but coastal habitats are more favoured.
Red deer are found in moderate numbers in the north west sector of Stewart Island, from Mason Bay to Smoky Beach, and occasionally in other areas

Possums

Possums occur in moderate to high densities throughout Stewart Island. If using cyanide, include a copy of your poisons licence with the application for a permit. Permits are issued for up to 90 days and will
include special conditions to avoid harming wildlife.
